Ms. Foundation Speaks Out in Response to the State of the Union

NEW YORK (February 5, 2019) – Ms. Foundation for Women President and CEO Teresa C. Younger released the following statement in response to the State of the Union and Democratic response to the State of the Union:

“While Donald Trump continues to live in his white supremacist world, we at the Ms. Foundation for Women are amplifying voices of truth and honesty. Tonight is about defining the country as we see it and sharing the vision of an all-inclusive society.

“We applaud the Democratic Party’s decision to elevate Stacey Abrams for the official rebuttal, as women of color, especially Black women, continue to stand at the front of progressive politics. Their voices, and that of Ms. Abrams, are a beacon of hope for inclusion. To lift them up and build their power is a clear rejection of the current administration’s divisive, homophobic, xenophobic, sexist, and regressive policies.

“Stacey Abrams, and countless women and girls of color who work tirelessly around the country each day, are this nation’s political future. It is high time we acknowledge their ability to create change and invest in their leadership. We should rally behind the message in Ms. Abrams’s strong rebuttal, and support the women leaders who advocate for fair wages, voting rights, and fight against cruel immigration policies that would see babies and toddlers separated from their families at the border. We should uplift those who would protect and improve our access to healthcare, including our right to decide if and when to parent.

“The Ms. Foundation and its grantee-partners stand with Stacey Abrams, as we stand with all women and girls who are fighting towards equity for all genders. If Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress want to blindly take this country backwards, we are happy to leave them in the past as we continue to push forward – with women of color at the helm.”

Ms. Foundation spokespeople are available for interviews by phone or in-person from NYC. To schedule, please contact Sunshine Sachs at [email protected].
