Ms. Foundation for Women on the Historic Win of Joseph R. Biden and Kamala Harris

NEW YORK (November 6, 2020) – Ms. Foundation for Women President and CEO Teresa C. Younger released the following statement regarding the results of the 2020 election:

“Over the last seven weeks of the 2020 election, and in the midst of a global pandemic, more than 74 million people cast their ballot for change in the White House. The Ms. Foundation applauds Joseph R. Biden and Kamala Harris on their monumental victory, supported by the most votes of any presidential team in U.S. history. We are especially ecstatic to witness the first Black or Asian person and the first-ever woman elected to serve as Vice President of the United States.

“Vice President-elect Harris’ position in power builds on the foundation laid by past and present feminists, like Shirley Chisholm, Barbara Jordan, Hillary Clinton, Stacey Abrams, and many others. As we celebrate this turning point, it is important to draw attention to the countless and arduous efforts of Black women and women of color, who historically have been the backbone of our democratic process, and the many whose grassroots efforts contributed to this crucial win.

“But make no mistake, we cannot become complacent in the face of this win. The composition of our courts has radically changed over the last four years and we must urgently safeguard the rights of those who are most marginalized. And, in the immediate future, there are crucial runoff elections that require our attention in battleground areas. We must ensure that the leaders we elect into office reflect our values of social, economic, and political equality.

“This election held up a mirror and in it we saw plainly how racism, misogyny, and bigotry continue to divide and threaten our democracy. The Ms. Foundation resists the white supremacy, patriarchy, xenophobia, and classism that plague our society, and we will not falter in the fight ahead. Our voice will be heard and we will uplift the voices of grassroots organizations led by and for women and girls of color until there is full gender and racial equity for all people.”
