NEW YORK (November 20, 2019) – Ms. Foundation for Women President and CEO Teresa C. Younger released the following statement on Transgender Day of Remembrance:

“Today, on Transgender Day of Remembrance, we honor those we have lost to violence fueled by transphobic bigotry and hatred. We remember the 331 members of the transgender community across the world who have been murdered this year. We say the names of at least 22 trans women or gender nonconforming people who have been murdered in the United States since January 1, 2019 and commit to continuing the fight for equality in their names:

“The hatred and outright violence that persist towards trans women’s bodies are a terrible reminder of the entrenched bigotry that the transgender community faces each day. Systemic discrimination continues to disproportionately affect Black and brown trans women and girls, limiting their access to employment, housing, and healthcare. We cannot be silent and must demand an immediate response to this epidemic. Trans women are fighting for their lives. 

“The Ms. Foundation for Women is actively and intentionally expanding and increasing our support to transgender women and girls of color by joining the Future for Trans Generations. Together, alongside the work of our grantees, we will stand with the transgender community until their existence and their right to safety, equity and justice are secure. We believe that no one is safe until we are all safe, and will continue to work until this is a reality.”
