Ms. Foundation Responds to the 2020 State of the Union
NEW YORK (February 5, 2020) – Ms. Foundation for Women President and CEO Teresa C. Younger released the following statement in response to the 2020 State of the Union:
“The president’s State of the Union address was riddled with lies and strayed far from the lived reality of hundreds of millions of people. He set forth a partisan, bleak agenda that would strip women of their bodily autonomy and further fan the flames of racism, sexism, and xenophobia.
“Our democracy is at a critical impasse. There is no time to be disillusioned or distracted from the work that needs to be done. We must fight for a country where no human being is called ‘illegal’ and where children no longer sleep in cages. This means continuing to support organizations and organizers who are fighting to ensure that all workers earn a fair wage, have safe working conditions and can provide for their families. We must work together to build a society where people living with disabilities are afforded the same options as anyone else, where climate change does not threaten our children’s very existence, and where no one is discriminated against for their gender identity or sexual orientation.
“The Ms. Foundation for Women and our grantee partners categorically reject Donald Trump’s message of fear and division. Today we carry on the same as yesterday: working for a future in which power and possibility are not limited by identity. In the coming months and years, this country will need more than ever the leadership of those most impacted by the catastrophic policies of this president. That is why we remain focused on the goal of full gender and racial equity. We steadfastly believe in hope, unity, and the power of representation fueled by grassroots movements.”
