Ms. Foundation Speaks Out on SCOTUS Decision in Fulton v. City of Philadelphia

NEW YORK (June 17, 2021) – Ms. Foundation for Women President and CEO Teresa C. Younger released the following statement in response to the court case decision on Fulton v. City of Philadelphia: 

“The Ms. Foundation for Women is disappointed to see the Fulton v. City of Philadelphia court case ruling due to its potential for allowing providers to discriminate and harm families.

“Ultimately, there are more than 500,000 children in our broken foster care system and it will be children and families of color who stand to suffer most of all. Children of color, especially LGBTQIA, African American, Latinx and Native American youth—have historically been, and continue to be, disproportionately involved in the child welfare system. Deeming someone ‘unfit’ to foster children based on who they love or which gender they identify with is absolutely ludicrous and it impacts the opportunities that foster children have in bettering their quality of life and building paths toward successful adulthood. 

“With even a single case, such decisions allow the system to continue failing children and families by denying children the right to have caring, loving foster parents. There are no certainties under any administration and our constant vigilance is not only needed – it is required – to ensure that all are afforded the equality we deserve. The Ms. Foundation will always stand with grantee partners such as Young Women’s Freedom Center, Soul Sister Leadership Academy, Youth Breakout, Delores Bar Weaver Center, Girls for Gender Equity, and Truth Council to call out and fight any acts that attack human rights and prohibit anyone from leading full lives.“
