Ms. Foundation Issues Statement on President Trump’s Nominee for the U.S. Supreme Court

NEW YORK (September 26, 2020) – Ms. Foundation for Women President and CEO Teresa C. Younger released the following statement in response to the announcement of President Donald Trump’s nominee for the U.S. Supreme Court to replace the late Ruth Bader Ginsburg:

“We at the Ms. Foundation strongly condemn today’s announcement of President Trump’s nominee to replace the Supreme Court Justice seat of the late Ruth Bader Ginsburg. With just 38 days until the presidential election, Donald Trump and conservative leaders are attempting to rush through an approval process for this lifetime appointment, rather than letting the American people have a voice in who sits on the highest court in the land.

“While it is our mission to respect, value, and uplift the voices of women, it’s equally important to have shared values as women, and Judge Amy Coney Barrett’s record has not demonstrated a commitment to broadening gender equity for all. Coney Barrett is entitled to her personal beliefs; however, her conscious religious bias threatens the Supreme Court’s legitimacy and its inherent need for neutrality.

“Her appointment is dangerous and would jeopardize reproductive justice and the survival of Roe v. Wade – which she once described as a framework for ‘abortion on demand,’ the Affordable Care Act and those who rely on it for health care coverage, immigration, racial justice, LGBTQ rights, and more.

“The Ms. Foundation and our grantee-partners urge our leaders to postpone this appointment until after every Americans’ vote is counted. The race to fill Justice Ginsburg’s seat is not only disrespectful to her last wish and legacy, but the American people, our democracy, and feminist progress.”
