NEW YORK (October 1, 2019) – Ms. Foundation for Women President and CEO Teresa C. Younger released the following statement following the life of Jessye Norman:  

“Today, the Ms. Foundation for Women celebrates the life of renowned opera singer and former board member, Jessye Norman, who passed away yesterday at the age of 74.

“Norman’s voice touched and changed the lives of people across the world, but it was how she used her powerful voice off of the stage that made her impact so poignant. 

“Throughout her illustrious career, Norman fought racial prejudices and advocated for more women in leadership roles in the arts. She brought great enthusiasm to the work of the Ms. Foundation for Women and was a critical influence in developing Take Our Daughters to Work Day. 

“As a five-time Grammy Award-winning artist, including one for lifetime achievement, Norman brought her talents all across the world, performing at the Metropolitan Opera, at inaugurations of Presidents Reagan and Clinton, at England’s celebration of Queen Elizabeth II’s 60th birthday, and graciously, at Ms. Foundation benefits at the Pierre Hotel.

“The Ms. Foundation for Women remembers the inspirational leadership of Jessye Norman, and commits to continuing her legacy.”
