Ms. Welcomes Myles Markham
by Ms. Foundation
Myles Markham joins Ms. Foundation as the Major Gifts Officer. What brought you to Ms. Foundation? I am someone who grew up queer, transmasculine, mixed-race, working class, and religious in the Deep South in the 90’s. I saw third wave feminism making strides in expanding the scope of what the movement meant by “diversity and inclusion,” that work, as well as the achievements that came before were utterly lost on my community and others like it. Encountering the kind of intersectional feminism Ms. Foundation has supported for decades quite literally saved my life in college. In response, I’ve spent my adulthood so far working for organizations that seek to expand our movement’s liberative potential beyond the academy and the neo-liberal geographies it often stays confined. Getting to work at Ms. Foundation is a continuation of the work I believe I am most called to, and I couldn’t be more honored to be here! What gets you out of bed every morning? My morning routine. I love waking up with the sun, stretching, making coffee, reading, journaling, and having time to be with myself before the workday begins. Who is a badass feminist who inspires you? I’m mad about being asked to pick just one, but at this moment the first person that came to mind is my grad school advisor, Dr. Christine Hong. What advice would you give to your younger self? I’d like to read to younger me Mary Oliver’s Wild Geese: “You do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees
for a hundred miles through the desert, repenting.
You only have to let the soft animal of your body
love what it loves.
Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.
Meanwhile the world goes on.
Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain
are moving across the landscapes,
over the prairies and the deep trees,
the mountains and the rivers.
Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,
are heading home again.
Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting–
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.”
