Unsure what a donor advised fund (DAF) is and if it is a right giving mechanism for you? A DAF is an investment account that you set up with a financial institution or community foundation for the purpose of philanthropic giving. Most financial institutions have a low minimum to set up a DAF, so they are a flexible giving vehicle at all giving levels. DAFs can be funded with a variety of assets, such as cash and stocks. The funds offer an immediate tax benefit and if you fund your DAF using stocks, you save on capital gains taxes. Beyond tax benefits, DAFs also allow the following:
- Organized giving out of one account
- Increased impact through investment growth when the financial institution invests your contributions
- Scheduled grants to recur monthly or annually
- Simplified process to add Ms. Foundation as a beneficiary of your DAF to continue your legacy
