Ms. Foundation Speaks Out Against Department of Education Title IX Rules: “Students in this country deserve better than Betsy DeVos, and better than the Department of Education’s blatant disregard for their safety.”
NEW YORK (November 19, 2018) – Ms. Foundation for Women President and CEO Teresa C. Younger released the following statement following the Department of Education’s newly proposed Title IX rules:
“The administration’s new Title IX rules are, simply put, a regressive nightmare and a giant step backward. Title IX has been a federal law for 46 years, continuously evolving to ensure that schools eliminate gender-based barriers to educational opportunities in all forms, but these new rules will do nothing but discourage sexual assault reporting and investigations and make it more difficult for those who do come forward to bring their assailants to justice. One in five women experience sexual assault while in college, and 34% of those survivors do not graduate.
“This policy is a sure sign that Betsy DeVos and the Trump Administration do not care about women and girls, students, or safety on college campuses across the country. These changes lack basic empathy and understanding towards survivors of sexual assault, and protect the men who continue to prey on women and commit unwanted attacks against our bodies. This policy is a slight to all survivors and allows those who perpetrate these heinous acts to continue to evade responsibility.
“Students in this country deserve better than Betsy DeVos, and better than the Department of Education’s blatant disregard for their safety. The Ms. Foundation for Women and our grantee-partners condemn sexual violence and are committed to women’s safety on and off campuses, in the workplace, and in their private lives. We will not rest until women are believed and those who disrespect, harm, and violate women are brought to justice.”
