Ms. Foundation for Women on Justice Kennedy’s retirement: “Our investment and support of local grassroots leaders working at the state and municipal level…will be the key to resistance, and activate the power of the people. Democracy belongs to us – we will not, and cannot, go back.”
Ms. Foundation for Women, one of the first and oldest women’s funds in the United States, issues the following statement:
Teresa C. Younger, President and CEO of Ms. Foundation for Women:
“The news of Justice Kennedy’s retirement marks a devastating shift in our institutions of justice. After 25 years of progressive legislation and progress, Kennedy’s absence will lead way to the instatement of a conservative justice that will cement this administration’s long desire to repeal Roe v. Wade, place drastic restrictions on a woman’s right to choose, and allow for the unmitigated cruelty towards immigrants, the LGBTQ community, and communities of color.
President Trump has not been shy about his plans to appoint a justice that will attack our constitutional right to abortion, and we have no doubt that his appointee will continue to affirm this administration’s callous disregard for the civil rights of our nation’s most vulnerable.
In just two days, the Supreme Court has ruled against the Muslim community, reproductive justice, and middle class America. With a new Supreme Court appointee, the nation’s highest court will be able to turn our president’s bigoted statements into law.
We cannot allow the debilitation of hopelessness to distract us from the fight. Our investment and support of local grassroots leaders working at the state and municipal level, like our grantee-partners, will be the key to resistance, and activate the power of the people. Democracy belongs to us – we will not, and cannot, go back.”
For over 40 years, the Ms. Foundation for Women has worked to build women’s collective power in the U.S. to advance equity and justice for all. The Ms. Foundation invests in, and strengthens the capacity of women led movements to advance meaningful social, cultural, and economic change in the lives of women.
