One Fair Wage (OFW) builds power with and for service workers to raise wages and end all subminimum wages nationwide. The subminimum wage, a legacy of slavery, is still $2.13 an hour federally. Our membership of 300,000 restaurant and service workers across the country are largely people of color and women who guide our campaigns. We have also organized a national association of ‘high road’ restaurant owners who prioritize fair wages. One Fair Wage is on the precipice of historic change. For the first time since Emancipation, over 1,000,000 workers have left the industry, and thousands of restaurants are raising wages to recruit staff. In response to the surge in worker power, we launched the ‘25 by 250’ campaign in 2022 to push for higher wages and the end of subminimum wages in 25 states, coinciding with the U.S. 250th Anniversary. Since then, we’ve achieved notable successes, including One Fair Wage victories in Chicago, Washington, D.C., and Michigan, which became the first state in 40 years to end the subminimum wage east of the Mississippi. We anticipate further wins in Massachusetts, Illinois, and Baltimore in 2024. Our ultimate goal is to help pass federal policy to end the subminimum wage nationwide.
