NEW YORK — Teresa C. Younger, President and CEO of the Ms. Foundation for Women, released the following statement in response to President Trump’s Supreme Court nomination pick:
“Today, President Trump appointed Judge Neil Gorsuch to serve on the highest court in our country. Judge Gorsuch is a staunch supporter of ‘religious freedom’ bills used to discriminate against the LGBTQ community. This nomination comes on the same day as the president pledged to enforce an existing executive order protecting the LGBTQ community. The irony of appointing a member of the judiciary who is opposed to such protections is not lost on us.
He has also ruled in favor of employers, like Hobby Lobby, who have continuously sought to deny women’s right to coverage for contraceptives. In nominating Judge Gorsuch, President Trump has shown plainly what role he believes the Supreme Court should play: a partial judiciary that rules over women’s bodies and defends corporations over equality and reproductive freedom.
At such a pivotal moment in our history and with critical issues set to come before the Supreme Court, we cannot afford to go back. We urge the Senate to vigorously scrutinize this nominee and ensure the next Supreme Court Justice will uphold justice for all not just for a few.”
