NEW YORK — Today, the Ms. Foundation for Women announces the launch of the Feminist Celebrity of 2015 survey. The nomination period will close on November 30th. On December 1st, the top nominees will be voted on to determine the top ten feminist celebrities.
The Ms. Foundation is launching the survey to highlight the resurgence of support for the word feminist and Feminism. Earlier this year, the Ms. Foundation released new findings on adopting the feminist label. The poll found broad support for Feminism, when people understand what it means. While a minority (16 percent) of those polled considered themselves feminists, after being given a simple definition of the term, 52 percent considered themselves feminists.
The Feminist Celebrity of the Year survey follows on the heels of the launch of the foundation’s #MyFeminismIs multimedia campaign. The aim of the campaign is to invite anyone who believes in the definition of Feminism as “the social, economic and political equality of ALL genders,” to “tell us what your Feminism Is…” Through user-generated content, the Ms. Foundation is helping feminists paint the true face of Feminism in the United States.
“Celebrities who embrace Feminism or speak out for women’s equality are helping to spread the word and build support for Feminism and women’s rights,” said Ms. Foundation for Women President and CEO Teresa C. Younger. “The annual Feminist Celebrity of the Year survey is not a competition; it’s an opportunity to acknowledge celebrities who help raise awareness about equality while expanding the conversation about Feminism to even more people.”
Cosmopolitan.com is the exclusive media partner for the campaign for the second year running.
