Ellen DeGeneres, Feminist Celebrity Nominee

Ellen D

A comedian, television host, actor, writer and producer, Ellen DeGeneres has been shattering glass ceilings since the beginning of her career.  In April 1997, on her self-named sitcom Ellen, DeGeneres’s character became the first lead in sitcom history to openly acknowledge her homosexuality on air.

Ellen has been an outspoken LGBTQ and women’s rights activist who has consistently used her public platform to highlight inequality. For the last 12-year Ellen she has used her Emmy-winning The Ellen DeGeneres Show to deliberately create space for conversations on the barriers that exist to achieving gender equality, discussing gender norms and ageism with Tiny Fey and calling out sexist products.
