Organization to donate 1000 copies of book that celebrates women in diverse fields to New York City public schools

NEW YORK — Today, the Ms. Foundation for Women proudly announced its plan to donate 1,000 copies of the feminist children’s book “Rad American Women A-Z: Rebels, Trailblazers and Visionaries who Shaped our History…and Our Future” to New York City public school libraries. The donation is made possible by a $10,000 gift from Seth M. Rosen and Jacob K. Goertz, in honor of their daughter, Sarah Gray Goertz-Rosen, in the hope that she will be educated in a city striving for political, economic and social equality across genders.

The books will be donated on November 3, 2015. The contribution will be recognized at the New York City School Library System 2015 Annual Fall Conference sponsored by the New York City Department of Education Office of Library Services.

“As feminists, strong supporters of the Ms. Foundation and believers in the power of education and reading, we are honored to make this gift to benefit students in New York City public schools,” said Rosen. “Our hope is that ‘Rad American Women A-Z’ will inspire girls and boys to be leaders and change makers in whatever field inspires them.”

“Rad American Women A-Z” was written by Kate Schatz and illustrated by Miriam Klein Stahl. It is the only children’s book published by City Lights Publishers in their 60-year history. It became a New York Times Bestseller quickly after its release in March 2015. The Ms. Foundation for Women is partnering with City Lights and the New York City Department of Education Office of Library Services to facilitate this donation.

“The strength of this incredible book lies in the promotion of representation of all women. So many times the story of history is told and key populations feel left out or invisible,” said Ms. Foundation President and CEO Teresa C. Younger. “I am encouraged that students, particularly young women in the New York public school system, will have an opportunity to see themselves in the stories and images presented in this much needed book.”

The Ms. Foundation for Women celebrates this bold, engaging and educational book, and its A-Z list, which includes the names and accomplishments of women both known and unknown. “Rad American Women A-Z” acknowledges the countless strong, intelligent and talented women who made American history.
