Statement by Ms. Foundation President and CEO Anika Rahman on the Supreme Court Decision Upholding the Affordable Care Act

June 28, 2012 - NEW YORK

"The Ms. Foundation for Women is thrilled that the Supreme Court did not let politics interfere with its decision. Health care is a basic human right that will now be realized for the 50 million Americans lacking coverage.

"This landmark decision significantly improves the lives of millions of women by affirming equality in access to health care. Women will no longer have to pay more than men for the same insurance coverage and won't be denied coverage due to pre-existing conditions.

"Since its implementation began, the Affordable Care Act has made health care not only more affordable, but also more accessible, to women who are excluded from our current system, including low-income women and women of color. The health care law provides economic security to all women, ensuring that they won't lose access to critical services and making basic women's health services available with no co-pay."

About the Ms. Foundation for Women

The Ms. Foundation for Women is the leading national social justice foundation committed to building women's power to ignite change. Every day, it helps over 150 grassroots organizations across the US fight for changes like good paying jobs, reproductive health, ending violence against women and girls, and the inclusion of women at decision-making tables. By investing in social justice trailblazers--especially women from low-income communities and communities of color most affected by injustice--it works for a nation in which power and possibility are not limited by gender, race, class, or any other factor. The Ms. Foundation delivers funding, builds skills, develops leaders, connects activists with allies, and amplifies the voices of our grantees to create change that benefits women, families and communities.
