Women Deserve Health Care That Meets Their Individual Needs

Time writer's opposition to health care equity is antithetical to values of equity, justice

NEW YORKAug. 23, 2013—The Ms. Foundation for Women released the following statement in response to Hadley Heath's Time op-ed defending the practice of charging women more for health care.

Ms. Foundation for Women Director of Women's Health Ellen Liu said:

"One of the principles of the Affordable Care Act is health equity – the idea that every individual should be able to access the health care that meets his or her unique needs, distinct from the needs of others.

"Discrimination on the basis of breasts and a uterus is no different than discrimination based on skin color or other attribute.

"The Affordable Care Act rightfully bans sex discrimination, paving the way toward affordable and equitable access for millions of women."

The Ms. Foundation for Women fights to eliminate barriers for every woman in the U.S. For 40 years, we have worked tirelessly to secure women’s rights and freedoms with a special commitment to building the power of low-income, immigrant and women of color.
