Women Deserve Paycheck Fairness
Equal pay for equal work may be the law, but the reality is, women in the United States continue to get paid less than men who do the same work. Surprisingly, there is not one state in which women have gained economic equality with men. Unfair pay is not a regional issue. It is not a class, education or career-specific issue, either. The wage gap affects women across family structures, socio-economic backgrounds and occupations. Female restaurant workers, CEOs and surgeons alike are all getting short-changed.
And it is far worse for women of color. Today, women continue to earn 77 percent of what men earn. What's even more alarming is the fact that for every dollar earned by a white man, black women earn 67 cents and Hispanic/Latina women earn 54 cents.
Congress needs to pass the Paycheck Fairness Act.
Although unequal pay has been illegal since 1963, workers still lack access to legal tools needed to challenge discrimination. The Paycheck Fairness Act would strengthen the Equal Pay Act of 1963, giving claimants the means to combat and undo discriminatory pay practices. More specifically, passage of the Paycheck Fairness Act would require employers to show that pay inequality is related to job performance rather than gender. The law would also make it illegal for employers to retaliate against employees who share salary information with coworkers.
President Obama has already asked Congress to pass the Paycheck Fairness Act this year. Now it's time for the rest of America to do the same.

The Paycheck Fairness Act is critical legislation that would close loopholes and help combat and undo discriminatory pay practices that plague our workplaces 50 years after the Equal Pay Act became law.
